{"id":1552,"date":"2017-03-30T11:49:57","date_gmt":"2017-03-30T11:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1552"},"modified":"2017-03-30T11:49:57","modified_gmt":"2017-03-30T11:49:57","slug":"the-use-of-beacons-in-smart-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/the-use-of-beacons-in-smart-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"The Use of Beacons in Smart Cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a recent paper by Gonzalo Cerruela Garc\u00eda, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iluque57\" target=\"_blank\">Irene Luque Ruiz<\/a>, and Miguel \u00c1ngel G\u00f3mez-Nieto of the University of C\u00f3rdoba, Spain on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1424-8220\/16\/11\/1968\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\">State of the Art, Trends and Future of Bluetooth Low Energy, Near Field Communication and Visible Light Communication in the Development of Smart Cities<\/a> (pdf)<\/p>\n<p>The paper explains how technologies (NFC, BLE, VLC) will be important for the Internet of Things in smart cities and how they will need to be connected via LoRaWAN, Sigfox, Weightless, LTE, and 5G. With regard to Bluetooth LE they say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Another challenge for the attention of BLE technology is the limited range problem; the range is directly dependent on Broadcasting Signal Power. An increase in signal power makes BLE devices less energy-efficient.
