Faheem Zafari, Ioannis Papapanagiotou, Michael Devetsikiotis and Thomas Hacker have a new paper on <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1703.07876.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An iBeacon based Proximity and Indoor Localization System <\/a>(pdf) that also uses filtering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They use a Server-Side Running Average (SRA) and Server-Side Kalman Filter (SKF) to improve the proximity detection accuracy compared&nbsp;to Apple&#8217;s immediate, near and far indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"572\" height=\"156\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/kalmanserverside.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/kalmanserverside.png 572w, https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/kalmanserverside-300x82.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 572px) 85vw, 572px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The researchers found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The current (Apple) approach achieved a proximity detection accuracy of 65.83% and 67.5% in environment 1 and environment 2 respectively. SRA achieved 92.5% and 96.6% proximity detection accuracy which is 26.7% and 29.1% improvement over the current approach in environment 1 and 2 respectively<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s interesting here is that the researchers have quantified the accuracy of Apple&#8217;s implementation in two scenarios.
