The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/using-beacons-with-ios-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">iOS location and Bluetooth permission changes<\/a> have caused users to opt-out of marketing messages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Right now opt-in rates to share data with apps when they\u2019re not in use are often below 50% \u2026  Three years ago those opt-in rates were closer to 100%<\/p><cite>Benoit Grouchko, Teemo<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>80% of those users stopped all background tracking across their devices<\/p><cite>Location Sciences<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Google&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"discontinuing support for Android Nearby notifications (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/android-developers.googleblog.com\/2018\/10\/discontinuing-support-for-android.html\" target=\"_blank\">discontinuing support for Android Nearby notifications<\/a> and Apple&#8217;s tightening of permissions have caused the demise of unsolicited marketing using beacons. This is understandable because unsolicited marketing is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/bbc-watchdog-beacon-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">seen by end-users as intrusive and creepy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the iOS and Android mechanisms are still there for more worthy applications such as visitor space usecases that need to provide location based information. For these types of application, there&#8217;s the need for good app onboarding explaining location and Bluetooth usage in order to provide the location-based information that the end-user is requiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While unsolicited marketing was the key benefit when iBeacon was first announced, the use of beacons has since diversified into less contentious and more practically useful areas such as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"real time locating (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/BeaconForRTLS\" target=\"_blank\">real time locating<\/a> (RTLS), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/BeaconsForTheInternetOfThings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">IoT Sensing<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"insights through machine learning (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/machinelearning\" target=\"_blank\">insights through machine learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a new article at DIGIDAY on how Apple\u2019s new privacy features have further rattled the location-based ad market.
