The app provides audio directions to guide passengers from the station entrance to Assisted Boarding Points on platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SWR-beacons.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7850\" width=\"449\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SWR-beacons.jpg 598w, https:\/\/www.beaconzone.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SWR-beacons-300x289.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 449px) 85vw, 449px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southwesternrailway.com\/other\/news-and-media\/news\/2022\/august\/swr-leads-the-way-in-industry-first-sight-loss-assistance-trial\" target=\"_blank\">confusing article on the South Western Railway site<\/a> attempts to explain how it works. It says <em>&#8220;the myEyes app uses Near Field Technology to guide customers with sight loss around stations&#8221;<\/em>. This isn&#8217;t true because Near Field Technology (NFC) isn&#8217;t used. It uses a smartphone&#8217;s GPS to know the passenger has reached a station and then Bluetooth beacons within the station.  The article says <em>&#8220;Bluetooth beacons installed across the station track the device in question&#8221;<\/em>. This also isn&#8217;t true because it&#8217;s the wrong way around.
